A comparison of C0 and G1 continuous curved tetrahedral meshes for high-order finite element simulations

چکیده
This paper examines the effect of curved boundary continuity on finite element simulations. Quartic C0 continuous and G1 continuous meshes with curved boundaries are created from CAD geometry. These C0 continuous and G1 continuous surface triangles are constructed using Bézier triangles and triangular Gregory patches respectively. Curved tetrahedra are constructed using a shape blending with tetrahedral mapping. The curved meshes are solved on using a high-order finite element method. The effect of surface continuity on solution accuracy is quantified for a simple fluid problem in three dimensions. c © 2015 The Authors. Published by Elsevier Ltd. Inserting curved boundary layers for viscous flow simulation with high-order tetrahedra
We propose an a posteriori approach for generating curved meshes for viscous flow simulations composed by high-order tetrahedra. The proposed approach is performed in the following three steps: (1) generate a linear tetrahedral mesh for inviscid flow; (2) insert a boundary layer mesh, composed by linear tetrahedra, on the viscous part; and (3) convert the linear tetrahedral mesh to a curved and...
متن کاملOptimization of a regularized distortion measure to generate curved high-order unstructured tetrahedral meshes
We present a robust method for generating high-order nodal tetrahedral curved meshes. The approach consists of modifying an initial linear mesh by first, introducing high-order nodes, second, displacing the boundary nodes to ensure that they are on the CAD surface, and third, smoothing and untangling the mesh obtained after the displacement of the boundary nodes to produce a valid curved high-o...
متن کاملImpact of Tetrahedral Mesh Quality for Electromagnetic and Thermal Simulations
Finite element simulation can be directly affected by mesh quality. The accuracy of finite element calculations is dependent upon of the mesh quality. Previously, we have introduced a novel approach to the construction of high-quality, isotropic tetrahedral meshes from segmented medical imaging data. This article proposes an experimental evaluation of the impact of our tetrahedral meshes on ele...
متن کاملOn Nonobtuse Refinements of Tetrahedral Finite Element Meshes
It is known that piecewise linear continuous finite element (FE) approximations on nonobtuse tetrahedral FE meshes guarantee the validity of discrete analogues of various maximum principles for a wide class of elliptic problems of the second order. Such analogues are often called discrete maximum principles (or DMPs in short). In this work we present several global and local refinement techniqu...
متن کاملDefining Quality Measures for Validation and Generation of High-Order Tetrahedral Meshes
A procedure to quantify the distortion (quality) of a high-order mesh composed by curved tetrahedral elements is presented. The proposed technique has two main applications. First, it can be used to check the validity and quality of a high-order tetrahedral mesh. Second, it allows the generation of curved meshes composed by valid and high-quality high-order tetrahedral elements. To this end, we...
